Time Management: The Key to Effective Workouts

Updated: Oct 7

The Importance of Planning

Time to vent a little. The other day, the kids wanted to watch something on TV, but they couldn’t find the remote. We’ve had this conversation before. I always tell them to put the remote back in one of two spots: on the TV stand or the fireplace ledge.

Do they listen? Of course not. Now we can’t find the remote, and they’re getting wound up, asking me to help. Reluctantly, I help them search. We look everywhere, moving the couch and checking under cushions. My frustration grows. I could be doing something else, and here I am, wasting time.

After about ten minutes, we finally find it. All is well, but I make my point clear again: when you’re done, put it in one of those spots. So we don’t have to do this again. Has it happened since? Of course. But now, I don’t help them find it. They know it’s up to them, or they won’t be watching any TV.

Wasting Time: A Common Frustration

What does this have to do with anything? It got me thinking about wasting time. It drives me crazy. If you have a plan, you can use your time better and achieve a better outcome.

I remember my first experience at a gym. It was a fancy Virgin Active gym that had just opened. I was about 14 or 15 when my friend signed up and encouraged me to join. I would ride my bike there, and we would train together.

We didn’t know what we were doing. There was all this fancy equipment, but no one to show us how to use it. So, we just wandered around, trying out different exercises. We did about 15 exercises, a few sets each, and then moved on. Effective? Not at all. A waste of time? Definitely. But the curly fries at the café were awesome!

The Need for a Structured Workout Plan

Over the years, I’ve learned that having a plan is essential. Whether you create a plan yourself before entering the gym, hire someone to write one for you, or attend a class with a structured routine, it’s the most effective and time-efficient way to work out.

None of us have hours to spend in the gym. We need a plan, structure, and effort. With these elements, we can leave knowing we’ve done something good for our bodies and minds.

The famous quote goes, "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail." This applies to most things in life, including fitness.

Maximizing Your Time in the Gym

Our time is precious. We have countless things to do and think about. Let me take the gym planning off your plate. With a solid plan, you can focus on your workout and achieve your fitness goals.

In conclusion, don’t let the little things, like losing a remote, distract you from what’s important. Have a plan in place, whether it’s for your workouts or daily tasks. It will save you time and frustration in the long run.

Remember, effective planning leads to better outcomes. So, let’s make the most of our time together in the gym!
